Dr. Alams [Artist Review]

Written by Imani Wj Wright

As a music journalist and curator, in order for me to do my job accordingly, I have to listen to a ton of music on a weekly basis. There are times where i listen to a piece, and I know within the first 2-3 seconds whether I'll enjoy it or not. Then, there are moments like yesterday where I heard a record such as 'Be Mine' by Dr. Alams x Vee.

Immediately, I was hooked. I couldn't even get past the first 30 seconds before starting it over. That cycle continued for several spins before I finally got through the whole thing. And let me tell you, it get me out of my seat. I actually grabbed my fiancé's hand and had a few dances with her. The smooth Afrobeat production is alluring, and the the way Alams' vocals come through the speakers is incredibly clean. His talent is evident, and you know you're listening to an artist who is highly entrenched in his art. I was very impressed and excited to hear more of his work.

I turned on his record, 'You & I" which is also a collaborative record with Vee. It's more sensual, but doesn't miss a single beat (no pun intended). The hook is catchy, and worth an addition to your late-night/party playlist. Alams' inflection is so free in its creativity, but undoubtedly structured in its execution.

I've just discovered one of my new favorite artists...
