“Winning takes talent; to repeat takes character.” – John Wooden
Have you ever been around a person who just had that it factor? They always seem to be at the top of whatever they do. As astounding as they may seem, this isn't by chance, or any kind of "luck", there's a significant level of dedication, focus, and work that goes into not only being at the top, but staying at the top. Maryland native, Ethan Spellen, one of the top Soccer stars in his region falls into that category.
At the youthful age of 16, Spellen has already been offered an academic scholarship to Washington Adventist University. This is evidently one of many to come as Spellen is not only a sought after athlete, but also a standout student.
"Even though being an athlete will take me far, I feel that my academics will take me further. Being an athlete, an injury can ruin your whole career. Everybody knows that. Scholarships can be taken away, things like that. but no one can take away your academics and how good you are in school. That's what I've been focusing on- especially my mom, she's been pressuring me to keep up with my grades," Spellen explained. Spellen attributes the aforementioned as to some of the reasons he's been offered his current scholarship (and projected many more).
Spellen's father, Andre Spellen keeps Ethan on a strict dietary plan which heavily consists of an assortment of beans, with not only the focus being nutrition, but discipline. Ethan Spellen's dedication to his schooling is something out of the movies. With an opportunity to attend soccer showcases in London and Italy, Spellen declined since it interfered with his class schedule. "Discipline, every single athlete needs. With that discipline, you'll be able to improve and grow as a player overall," Spellen explained. He also went on to thank his father for putting him in front of coaches and providing him with ample opportunities to flourish. Playing 19u at the age of 16, Spellen's player card reads:
"Ethan is a left footed defender with outstanding speed, physicality, and aggressiveness. His anticipation of danger often shuts down opponents and his supporting attacking runs usually creates scoring opportunities in the box."
Stay up to date with Spellen's journey, it's had quite the start- but it's just beginning.
