I honestly don’t know where I would be without my mother and this song captures that exact feeling. Gen Bello pens a dedication piece to her mother entitled, Dear Mom, letting us know that she’s her rock. We all have those one/two parents who are there for us and push us to pursue our dreams. When they do that and sacrifice their own dreams in the process or sacrifice in general, we appreciate it more and want to pay them back.
Gen Bello is certainly on her way to doing so, especially with songs like this one.
I can only imagine what it was like to play this song for her- and that feeling being replicated throughout households. You can hear certain neosoul elements in new-age form, a la Jhené Aiko and Snoh Aalegra. It’s the perfect tempo on a breezy afternoon with family… the cookout vibes. Gen Bello lays out a plan throughout the song to be successful, not only for herself but for her mother as well. When she wins, the whole family wins. I can tell her mother is a strong woman who’s family oriented and an encouraging.
That type of energy is felt throughout the entire track. It makes me want to play this for my mom so she can know it’ll all work out. I think Gen Bello will do everything she set out to do in Dear Mom. With her talent, she can go far.
