In 2024, lo-fi has made a resurgence, exhibiting a dominating sound in several other genres. Whereas lo-fi used to be primarily seen on Youtube playlists titled “beats to relax/study to” or playing over a track featuring the Homework Girl, tracks like c’est La Vie allow a creative mixture of vocals and the instrumental factor that made it so popular.
The track’s creator, Matt Sterling, has manipulated the vocals to be more high-pitched and electronic, complimenting the fast-paced yet relaxing percussion. This style has been seen in artists such as Jaydes, PinkPantheress, and beabadoobee. These types of artists create a whimsical atmosphere mixing genres such as pop, R&B, alternative, and electronic with the urban “boom bap” of lo-fi.
If you’re ready for the wave, check out Matt Sterling’s c’est La Vie.
