Sam MacPherson- Routine (Track Review)

Written by Parys Wyatt

If you’re not prepared to be in your feelings right now, this article is not for you. Just kidding, you probably need it. Have you ever been in a long term relationship that felt so permanent, life without your partner just felt surreal after it ended? Me neither, but Sam MacPherson paints an amazingly vivid picture for us with his song, Routine. A heartfelt ballad about a love he never thought would end, Routine is a real tear-jerker. Sam’s vocals float over a soft, minimalistic track, creating a piece that effortlessly pulls your emotions out.

From beginning to end, he reminisces with us, giving the listener a play-by-play of the cherished past he spent with his lover. The little visuals Sam provides leave a heavy feeling behind, making space for nothing but empathy in the hearts of his audience. Not only does Sam make his flashbacks accessible, he also shares his regret for taking the moments he describes for granted. In case you were wondering, I’m not crying, you are.  In the chorus, he sings, “I was so accustomed to having you with me/Falling in love was a part/ Of my everyday routine.” Y’all … if I had the power to do so I would help Sam MacPherson turn back the hands of time just off this song alone, because at this point, I don't know if the heartbreak is his or mine.
